CHASHAMA PRESENTS

BEAT IT

A NEW PERFORMANCE WORK BY ERIN MCMONAGLE

FEATURING AARON MATTOCKS, ERIN MCMONAGLE, ANNIE WEINBERG + ALL INTERESTED PARTIES!

JUNE 27 – JULY 4 / 2005

CHASHAMA: 217 EAST 42^ND STREET / BETWEEN 2^ND + 3^RD AVENUES

TIMES: 2–10pm Mo(27th)-Tu / 12–7pm W–F / 10am–6pm S–Su / 10am–2pm Mo(4th)

Referencing pop culture and theories of shared memory BEAT IT is an open performance / rehearsal that will teach the choreography from the 1983 smash hit. Through this process the existing cultural memory of the song will be strengthened and expanded on. The structure of the performance will take the music, choreography and history of BEAT IT and transform it from a static common language into a physical participatory experience.

BEAT IT will function like an open rehearsal where all are invited and encouraged to watch, participate and share in the project. Beginning at 2pm on Monday, June 27 the artist, Erin McMonagle, will teach herself the choreography from the video. On the following day Erin will teach the choreography to the other featured performers, Aaron Mattocks and Annie Weinberg. From then on either the artist or one of the featured performers will be in the space to teach the choreography to any and all interested parties and passersby.

BEAT IT will be performed in the round, allowing the audience and participants to take advantage of Chashama’s unique storefront space. Audience members will be able to view the piece from the sidewalk or inside the theater.

The weeklong performance will culminate with a grand finale on July 4, at 2pm when all participants will be asked back to perform one last time, together.

All those interested are welcome and encouraged to take part in the performance. All performances are free and open to the public.

Bios

AARON MATTOCKS, a Pennsylvanian and Sarah Lawrence College alumnus, performs with Christopher Williams (most recently at P.S. 122 and the John Houseman Theater), and has worked with Kathy Westwater (Dance Theater Workshop), Sara Pearson & Patrik Widrig (City Center), Abby Block (Danspace Project), and the ubiquitous *flash* and pumpkin show (dirty dive bars). This is Aaron's third or 28th appearance on 42nd Street, depending on what counts as an "appearance". He loves the work of Erin McMonagle. At most other times, Aaron is the company manager for the Mark Morris Dance Group.

ERIN MCMONAGLE is so excited to be performing BEAT IT at Chashama! Originally from Minnesota, Erin attended Sarah Lawrence (along with Mr. Mattocks and Ms. Weinberg) and has been creating her own multi-media performance and installation work since then. Currently she is working on a theatrically based performance work that she plans to present in the winter of 2005 / 2006. Erin is also Development Associate at the Swiss Institute - Contemporary Art.

ANNIE WEINBERG is from Pittsburgh, and has just graduated from Sarah Lawrence College with a dual concentration in environmental studies and modern dance. She has performed in works by Philippa Kaye, Sara Smith, and Erin McMonagle. Recent employments include the Mattress Factory Museum in Pittsburgh; a medicinal plant farm in Guatemala; and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in the Bronx. As a child, she starred in three different productions of "Annie". She loves BEAT IT! and is so excited to be working with Erin/Aaron once again.
